County of Madera

District #1- Manuel Nevarez

Manuel Nevarez was appointed by Governor Brown on March 8th to complete the term for the Supervisor to District 1 and officially took the oath of office on March 12th.

Supervisor Nevarez is a lifelong Maderan. He is the son of Mexican immigrants who came to the United States seeking opportunity for their young family laboring in the fields of the San Joaquin Valley. Manuel learned family values, integrity and hard work from his parents, and to this day they define his character. As a parent, he seeks to instill those traits in his children. As a community member, Manuel lives and models those principles in his volunteer and advocate activities.

Manuel attended local schools and excelled academically. He was accepted into the GATE program (Gifted and Talented Education) by demonstrating comprehension and internalization skills and the ability to apply information. Family circumstances required that he work full time during school hours and Manuel reluctantly dropped out of high school before graduation. Because he understood the importance of education, Manuel earned his GED as soon as he was old enough to take the test. He enrolled in community college, but his education was interrupted by the need, once again, to support family, this time his own family. His energy and intelligence caught the eye of people in the real estate mortgage industry, and he took advantage offer of an entry level position with Santa Fe Mortgage Company.

Manuel began a career in 1997 in the retail mortgage industry. His talent moved him up the ladder quickly and he was recruited by a wholesale banking company which became a division of Washington Mutual. As an account executive, Manuel consistently performed in the top 20 producers in the company and he achieved national recognition for his high level of performance. At the present time, he continues to be involved in the mortgage industry as an advisor.

Manuel is dedicated to his community and backs it with countless hours volunteering and advocating in Madera and throughout the state. In recent years, Manuel, along with a committed group, founded the Madera Community Action Network (MCAN) with the goal of increasing civic participation and community advocacy. Manuel was the Executive Director. He has been involved in organizing voter outreach, voter registration drives and leadership workshops whose aim is to educate and involve young people in their community's civic life and to assume leadership roles including running for local elective office.

A deeply spiritual man, Manuel lives his faith daily. He is part of the leadership of his church. He has been to marriage retreats, youth programs and participates in the 'quest for authentic manhood' seminars. In addition, Manuel reaches out to those in need by teaching a weekly class to young men at the Madera Rescue Mission who are trying to put their lives together. He guides them on reconnecting to their families and reintegrating into the community.

Manuel and his wife, Leticia, have four children: Christian (14), Katheryne (11), Adrian (9) and Julian (8). Like his parents before, Manuel is focused on providing a safe and secure life for his children and strives to be a role-model of work ethic and integrity.

Manuel Nevarez is passionate about building a better community for all. He is giving his time to make that goal a reality.
